If you are planning to send your child to the library after school,

Please Read This First!

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The Will Rogers Library welcomes students interested in using their after-school hours to read, study, use computers, or take respectful advantage of the library’s many resources and continuing after-school programs.

However, due to recurring problem behaviors after school including fighting, theft, vandalism, and harassment of library patrons, parents should be aware of the following:

  • The library is not a substitute for childcare. The library cannot provide individual supervision and should not be considered an after-school care option.
  • The library’s General Conduct Policy* is strictly enforced. Please review the complete General Conduct Policy with your child so you both fully understand what is expected of every patron coming to the library.
  • Those students who do not follow the General Conduct Policy will be required to leave both the building and the library grounds.
  • Congregating outside the building (including the parking lot or grounds) is strictly prohibited. A $97 fine for loitering on library grounds may be enforced.

If your child is not interested in, or capable of using the library independently in accordance with these policies, please make other arrangements for them after school.

Additionally, we would like parents to understand:

  • While we enjoy getting to know our patrons of all ages, unlike a supervised school environment we often do not know your child. Nor does your child have to tell us who they are, much less who you are and how to contact you.
  • When a child’s behavior results in their being asked to leave the library property, the child is always given the opportunity to contact their parent/guardian before leaving. However, we cannot compel them to contact you, and most choose not to do so.
  • If your child leaves the building, or prefers to be outside, they cannot remain on library property. Please do not ask your kids to “wait outside the library” to be picked up, as they may not be allowed to do so.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping us to maintain a community library where persons of all ages can count on the value of quality library services offered in a pleasant, productive, and safe environment. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
